In the business and service world, superiors may very well be empio yers, but they are not always the same. A superior may be any one of the intermediaries who has the responsibility of managing or manning the office or a particular department. The employer, on the other hand, would commonly mean the highest or chief person in the organisation who has not only the power to give employment but also to relieve a person of the job, if need be. Employers, therefore, as a rule would not have any superiors unless, of course, we take into consideration all the customers and clients or members of the governmental authorities to whom the employer " has to be indirectly indebted, responsible or obliged.
The relationship between the employer and the employee is not that of the cat and the dog. On the contrary, since a person has to employ or a person has to serve in one form or another, this relationship should be mature and sensible. It is a fact that if a persen has to go ahead in his working life, he has to give his best to his employer. It is also true that an employer may get a number of persons in his employment but he may find difficulty in getting really efficient and devoted persons to work for him for any continued length of time. If that be so, the employer is just as much indebted to this loyal employee as the latter is to the employer. In short, workers there may be many and to spare but good and sincere workers are very few indeed. If an employer considers his employee inferior, lie would be committing a serious blunder. He pays his employee a salary in return for his work. He has to be considerate and kind to him. The employee cannot contribute his maximum to his work if he cannot rely on his employer at times of crises. Employees are not a herd of dumb-driven cattle. They are the implements of production of wealth for the country. Only through cajoling and sympathy '' can the highest amount of efficiency be got out of them and that too with their cooperation. In a work-place where the employer is able to create the right type of cooperation and a feeling of mutual trust and friendship, the total efficiency may be automatically maximised.
It does not cost the employer anything to address the employees politely. There is, however, no hard and fast rule and the employer who generates in his employees strong bonds and works shoulder to shoulder with them may be permitted even to deal roughly with the latter who may rather like it since they may admire or worship their boss. This boss has to be the moral master and not simply the physical or circumstantial one. If the boss loses his temper, if he is inconsiderate, hard to please, revengeful and so on, he can never be a true master to his employees. In the face of pontingencies and chaos, it is the master who has to take charge and command and lead his team. If, on the other hand, he raves and shouts and is nervous and frantic, his employees will have scant respect for him. He is the employer, he is taking all the risks, he has to shoulder all the burden.
