Good hygiene, combined with appropriate treatment, is the most effective way to deal with an infestation of worms, but attention to the right kind of diet can also play its part. Raw garlic has a reputation for helping to fight such infestations, but few children (and few adults) will be enthusiastic about chewing uncooked cloves.

You may find it is more acceptable when crushed and mixed into a salad dressing or scattered into a casserole- at least it is worth a try. Pumpkin seeds may go down better: try mixing them with sultanas and raisins or nuts, or adding them to breakfast cereal and plenty of pineapples and figs. A diet rich in fiber will help to keep the digestive system working effectively, so include starchy and green vegetables, lentils, beans and other pulses, oats and wholegrain foods such as bread, brown rice on the daily menu.

Children who are fussy about vegetables may be more willing to consume them in the form of juices. Until the worm's infestation has been thoroughly cleared, it is best to steer clear of live yoghurt containing lactobacilli, which help to rebalance gut flora. Cut out sugar and sugary foods, including fizzy drinks and squashes as well as juices with a high content of natural fruit sugar. Opt for vegetable juices instead.

Although most people find the idea of worm infestation disgusting, try to remember that it is not serious and does not reflect badly on the individuals affected.
