Check gladioli and begonia corms and throw out any that are diseased.

Cut chrysanthemums back when they have finished flowering.

If roses arrive when the ground is too hard to heel them in, remove any foliage, put the roots in a bag of moist peat, and store them out of the frost.

When planting standard roses, put a stake in first, and tie at thetop, just underthe head of branches.

Go over stored dahlia tubers. If they are looking shrivelled, soak in lukewarm water for a few hours. Cut out diseased parts, dust with sulphur. Encourage
Christmas roses to flower by giving them cloches made up from odd sheets of glass. Tip over-long shoots of rambler roses before they get blown about and damaged. Prune clematis Jackmanii.
