Plant out hardy perennials and biennials, and spring-flowering plants such as forget-me-nots, polyanthuses and wallflowers as soon as you have space in the beds.

Hyacinths, lily-of-the-valley and tulip bulbs can be put in now.

Hardy annuals sown in August should be thinned now.

Gladioli should be lifted beforethefrostgetsthem.

Hang the corms up to dry with thatop vegetation still attached, then store in sand.

Sweet peas can be sown in the open this month.

Wait until dahlias have been hit by frost before lifting them. Dry the tubers, dust them with sulphur, and store under damp peat in a frost-free shed.

Blackened leaves should be cut off.

Big clumps of lily-of-the-valley can be lifted, divided up and replanted in humus-rich soil in shady corners.

Pinks and carnations can be planted out now.

Move any roses you want to transplant. Try to maintain a soil ball round the roots, trim back any long roots, and water when in the new site.
