Another feature of the Vista Firewall is Authenticated Bypass. This enables you to use IPSec authentication to configure some systems to bypass rules you have in place. This gives you granular control over your rules. You can also create rules that are based on Active Directory (users, computers, or groups) using IPSec.
There are also some more new features of the Windows Firewall that should be discussed here:

  1. ICMP Blocking—The Ping tool is used to send echo request messages to another network location to see whether the system or device being pinged is capable of responding and whether the connections to that device are configured properly. Although this makes it a useful troubleshooting tool, at the same time hackers can use these same requests to find likely targets for their attacks. You can block these messages going in to or out of your network.
  2. Server and Domain Isolation—This enables you to isolate servers using IPSec policies so that only permitted servers can communicate with your system. Domains can also be isolated using IPSec policies between clients and servers. To learn more about isolation concepts, see http://www.microsoft.com/sdisolation.
  3. Network Access Protection—Allows you to create health policies so a computer that doesn’t pass its health standard is not capable of communicating with others. For example, if a system is not up-to-date with all its security patches, you can stop it from communicating on the network. To learn more about NAP see, http://www.microsoft.com/nap.
