The most interesting feature in Defender is a tool called Software Explorer. Software Explorer shows you the programs you have set to start up on Vista or those that are currently running. You can view network-connected programs and Winsock service providers as well.
Software Explorer gives you basic details and allows you (when possible) to end a process or go to Task Manager with the click of a button.
Here are some of the types of information provided through Software Explorer:

  1. Auto Start—This lets you know whether the program will start with Vista automatically.
  2. Startup Type—This provides the location where the program is registered to start, for example, the All Users Startup Folder or the Registry and so forth.
  3. Ships with Operating System—This is a nice touch because if it ships as part of the Vista installation, that should make you feel better about it because you know it’s not harmful (hopefully).
  4. Classification—Lets you know whether the application has been reviewed for potential risks to your privacy and security.
  5. Digitally Signed By—Lets you know whether the application has been signed and by whom. Microsoft recommends you trust only software that has been signed or vouched for by a third party.
You can alter the way information is presented to you. You can choose different categories and also determine whether you want applications shown to you based on the publisher or the startup type (which lets you know whether it’s started by the computer or the user).
