There are many reasons that carpets may become dirty, soiled, spotted, or stained. Carpet stain removal is often necessary on carpet placed in high traffic areas because it can become soiled more easily. To prevent this, keep a door mat at all entrances so that dirt or mud can be collected on the mat before reaching carpeted areas. It is also wise to vacuum carpets frequently. Vacuuming will help to keep carpets looking vibrant over time and to remove any current dirt particles. Some vacuums may come with carpet cleaning kits as well, for stains that cannot be removed with vacuum use.
Most stains on carpets are caused by the spilling of food or beverages. Some carpet stain removal is more difficult than others. For instance, a red wine stain is very difficult to remove because of its dark pigment that seeps into the carpet and stains the fibers. Lightly colored food or beverages, such as white wine, lemon-lime soda, or Alfredo sauce can be removed with simple cleaning products. For those types of stains, a simple dish soap and water will be an effective carpet stain removal choice, most of the time.
For more difficult stains, it is best to follow a few simple carpet stain removal steps. First, immediately scoop up or blot as much of the food or beverage as possible with a white cloth or paper towel. Never rub the area initially. Then, apply warm water to the stain and blot again with a cloth. A solution of one quart of warm water with one teaspoon of a mild non-bleaching laundry detergent is helpful for removing stains. It should cover the entire stain and soak into fibers for five minutes. Then, the stain can be rinsed with warm water and dried by blotting with a dry towel. After the carpet has dried, vacuuming the area is recommended to restore carpet texture.
