1) Keep it clean - Give your car, truck or SUV a good hand wash. Check the condition of the paint and touch-up in spots where it is needed. This is also a great time to check the condition of the windshield and replace the wiper blades.
2) Get under the hood - Your owner's manual will recommend the specific frequency of this type of maintenance for your vehicle. Summertime is also the perfect time to have your car's cooling and air conditioning systems checked out.
3) Hit the streets - Check the tread and check the pressure. Make sure your tires, even your spare, are in the best shape possible. This includes keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure, rotating them regularly and aligning them when necessary.
4) Be Prepared - Trunks have gotten roomier in the past several years, and many SUVs and trucks come with hidden compartments all over the interior. Be prepared by filling a little bit of this space with an emergency road kit. This should include a first aid kit, flashlight, flares, jumper cables and a gallon of water.
5) Leave it to the professionals - Before going on a long trip this summer, you might even consider taking your car in for a full summertime checkup. The professionals can check everything from top to bottom, inside and out.
