At ceremonial receptions, the guests and hosts are normally required to observe some form in respect of dress and other matters. At a marriage, the guests in India who are on the bride's side may not partake of the meal or other luxuries of the reception until the bride-groom has arrived with his party, and then too the groom's party has to be attended to first before others may help themselves. It may also rest on the bride's guests to render all possible help and assistance to the marriage-house and, on their own initiative, offer a grand welcome to the groom and his entourage.
The most important etiquette oil such occasions is to forget oneself as much as possible and get involved in the ceremony with spirit and good intentions. If in such cases a person gives much importance to small and negligible talk and is too conscious of his own image and prestige, he cannot give himself fully to participation in a ceremonial reception. The guests who come from the bride's side should thus be ready to fill in whatever gaps are there' in the reception and they should do all these things without being told and without batting an eyelid, because they must feel apprehensive of the bride's side who may already be in fear of some shortcoming or other in the welcome of the groom's people. Thus such receptions would require the spirit of sacrifice and social work and a person who has a practical bent and a way of mixing with the people would naturally give the best account of himself.
In like manner, there may be ceremonials like marriage engagements, the ceremony of the sacred thread, mundan (shaving of head) religious ceremony and events like these where the guests have to fit in and perform their functions in the manner most desirable. From this point of view, the people in the groom's party in a marriage should also be aware of what is the correct behaviour. They should not take it into their heads to behave like overlords under the impression that since they are accompanying the most important person in the ceremony, they can behave in whatever manner they like. Sometimes their courteous and polite behaviour may bring out the best welcome and service from the other side who may put their hearts into their actions with joy and sincerity.
