Every person is endowed with a distinctive personality. His talking, standing and all other movements have to be in tune with this personality. If there is a discord, if his movements are not smooth and natural, he may fail to create an impression on others. Far from that, he may sometimes be ill-mannered and sometimes ludicrous in his behaviour. It is, therefore, one of the main Tules of etiquette that one should learn or be taught to move one's hands and feet in a coordinated, agreeable and polite manner. Unnecessary gesticulations may at times prove intolerable or even ludicrous to others, especially in good and gentle company which is used to fine gestures and postures.
When a person is talking to another person, it is not good manners for him to move his hands too much, or raise his shoulders and shrug or toss his head every now and then. Certainly, if a person is not sure of himself, he may not be able to coordinate his movements with his words in an impressive manner. But even otherwise a person may have acquired some habits like touching his moustache or his spectacles or twitching the tip of his nose, or locking his hands together and so on. A well-mannered person will know how to keep his hands to his sides while talking. He may raise his hands, his shoulders or his eyebrows but these gestures should be so timed as not to stand out prominently during his conversation. Sometimes gestures may be so vehement that they may-hurt the other party, as when a person bangs his fist on the table or something, or gesticulates like giving a blow, or claps his palms together. These are not civil gestures and if there are ladies present in the group, these are certainly crude and disrespectful. Equally incivil is loud clapping of hands and slapping on the back or some other part of the body of another person without being absolutely sure beforehand that such a gesture will be appreciated by the latter. In fact, a person should not ordinarily touch another person's body unless he is very close to the latter.
