There are people who go on repeating the same thing over and over again, little realising that this is very annoying to the person who has to listen to all this. If a person repeats something for the understanding of another, it would mean that that person is doubting the intelligence of the latter. There are, of course, complex explanations which a person has to repeat for the benefit of the one spoken to. The best thing in the circumstances will be to wait for the other person to put questions, if any. If no question is forthcoming, it may be taken for granted that the listener has understood everything clearly. There are, however, different situations when repetitions become necessary, as in the case of official work (and the same is true of personal assignments as well). If the doer understands a thing wrongly, the work may be spoiled and losses may be incurred. Even on such occasions, it is more effective to put questions to the person concerned to find out whether the whole thing has been taken in perfectly by him.
While repetitions may be expedient in explaining facts and situations to a subordinate, in talking to equals and superiors, repetition may be considered bad manners. In a working bureaucracy, a superior is supposed to know more and hence to give more than necessary explanations or to repeat things for the understanding of this superior is unnecessary. In speech and writing, repetition is equally ineffective. When the habit of repetition becomes ingrained in one's nature, one may relish the words that one repeats again and again. There may be persons who may have repeated the same stories at every gathering. Such a person may not be really blamed because he may be doing this unintentionally or unconsciously and if he is at all to be blamed, he is to be blamed for the bad habit he has acquired and cannot get rid of. Only a sustained conscious effort can cure a person of this malady, and a malady it really is, since the narrator is sort of addicted to his repetition and does not feel full satisfaction unless he says times things over and over again.
