Smiling is a charming thing in the sphere of good manners, but if smiles are too frequently given, they may signify the insincerity of the person too obviously. It is also true that difficult situations can be easily got over with the help of timely smiles. However, if a person acquires the habit of smiling all too frequently without a genuine cause, the other side may take offence secretly. This is because smiles which arise without reason, and too profusely all the time, may convey just the opposite of the sense that is purported to be conveyed. Some may interpret these smiles as insolence or sarcasm or taunts. The rule, therefore, is smile by all means but smile moderately and intelligently at the proper time and place.

While smiles which are uncalled for may sometimes border on impudence, laughter at oddmoments definitely bespeaks bad manners and ill-breeding or lack of culture. The sound and tune of laughter may also bear mention. If a person laughs too loudly or heartily in a group that is not used to such laughter or is not in favour of the same, the laughing person may at once become the object of scorn, ridicule and even ill-feeling for breaking the code of conduct. In meetings, gatherings and shows also, a person has to control his urge to laugh loudly and unrestrainedly. There is a fine dividing line between laughter that expresses mirth and the one that expresses scorn, disbelief and so on. A well-behaved person should be acquainted with the art of the right intonations of laughter in different circumstances.

Smiles and laughter fall under the category of mannerisms sometimes because when such gestures cannot be made spontaneous and natural, they may evoke quite the contrary sentiment in others. People can recognise real or artificial smiles and laughter and instead of good effect, much ill-will may be produced unconsciously. He may be regarded as a laughing fool or buffoon. It is, therefore, not advisable that a person should have a smiling face and should laugh or smile at every alternate word that he may utter. The smile is reflected in eyes and real laughter is from the heart. Where there is lack of these conditions, a smile or a laugh may prove unwelcome and may cause many eyebrows to be raised.
