Plant out roses as soon as the soil is suitable and the weather mild.
Cut perennials down toabout 15 ins(40 cm) above soil level, then cut them right back in the spring.
Protect tender flowers from frost with mounds of dry peat.
Sacking draped over hydrangeas will protect the flower buds from frost.
Lift montbretia bulbs when the foliage has died right down.
Begonias, fuchsias, geraniums and other tender plants must be lifted before the frosts come.
Alpines and rock plants which are not completely hardy should be protected by a cloche, or even an old pane of glass.
