Sow over-wintering broad beans. Mazagon and Longpod are suitably hardy. After sowing sprinkle with a mix of 1oz(25g) sulphate of potash plus3oz (75 g) basic slag per square yard (square metre).

Crowns of globe artichokes should be covered with straw or other litter to protect them from the frost, after cutting down and removing any stems. Detach suckers and grow on indoors.

Lighten clay soil by sprinkling horticultural gypsum over it about a month before you want to dig it.

Earth up cabbages by covering with soil up to their bottom leaves, and protect cauliflowers by heeling them over and covering the stems with soil.

Protect autumn-sown lettuces with cloches.
