Build a relationship of trust with your dog: Your aggressive dog won’t take kindly to being trained, so you need to set this ball of training rolling by building trust between you. First, teach him the “Say Hello” command. Use people and dogs he is familiar with and once he learns the command, use this command in different environments and with strange dogs. For instance, when you see a strange dog, give your dog the “Say Hello” command and allow the two dogs to sniff each other for not more than three seconds. Once this time period comes to an end, pull your dog away and say in a cheerful voice, “Good boy! Say Hello!” and give him a food treat.

The trick in learning this exercise for you is to pluck the dog away from the situation before he shows any signs of aggression. If they both growl or snap, snatch your dog away from the other one and give your correction command. This could just be a very firm “No” and don’t give him a treat this time. Then, immediately to reinforce good behavior, use one of the dogs your dog likes. Repeat the above procedure with him and end with praise and a food treat. There are those dogs that can’t begin a relationship with the routine sniffing—they need to meet at a safe distance of about three to 10 feet. But if they don’t show any signs of aggression, they should be rewarded. If your dog needs to succeed at this, he will have to do this many times.
