All dogs should have basic dog obedience training; this ensures you, as the owner, can control your dog in public and around other animals. If you can, start when your dog is young, since a puppy tends not to have picked up any bad habits. And if they have, it is fairly easy to un-train them.
Although there are many books on the subject, generally they should be treated as supplements. Professional dog training classes tend to give the best practical experience and socialization exposure for your dog. Since most basic classes cost under $100, they are fairly accessible. Talk to your veterinarian, or other dog owners to find a good dog training class near you.
