Lead the Pack

Dogs are naturally pack animals. This means that dogs operate on a hierarchy system. In a family situation with people, a dominant dog may "test" his place in the pack by asserting himself. You would show that you are the leader by using a firm tone of voice and showing confident body language. When issuing a command, say it like you mean it. Avoid engaging in "dominance" type games such as playing tug of war with a rope. Always keep in mind what motivates your dog's behavior and treat him with respect and you'll have a willing follower in your pack!
