Another cool thing in Vista is the capability to now use Group Policies to control things we couldn’t before. Windows Defender Settings are now built in to the policies for Vista. From the Group Policy Object Editor (from the Start Orb, type gpedit.msc), browse to the following path: <Policy>\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Defender.
Here are the policies available:

  1. Turn on definition updates through both WSUS and Windows Update.

  2. Check for New Signatures Before Scheduled Scans.

  3. Turn off Windows Defender.

  4. Turn off Real-Time Protection Prompts for Unknown Detections.

  5. Enable Logging Known Good Detections.

  6. Enable Logging Unknown Detection.

  7. Download Entire Signature Set.

  8. Configure Microsoft SpyNet Reporting.
