The Malicious Software Removal Tool— Postinfection Removal Part 1Added on:10/2/2008 1:34:48 AM In Windows Vista Tips Rated by 1 users
- The Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) Postinfection Removal most likely sounds both gross and cool at the same time. The fact is people either don’t have antivirus stuff installed or don’t update their signatures. Either way, bad things happen to good computer users, and Microsoft, although not an antivirus maker, doesn’t want MyDoom running on its OS.
- It’s bad for business. So, it gave us the MSRT, not as a preventative tool, not to scan our files and protect us 24/7, but to scan system memory to see whether anything is currently running that is on its list. If it finds something bad, it crushes the process that caused it and deletes files or Registry keys associated with it, but it does not go searching for other instances of it like an antivirus software should do.
- To see a list of malicious software families that Microsoft has already focused on with the MSRT, check out this site: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/ families.mspx Microsoft provides you with different ways of running MSRT on your system: using Windows Update, the Microsoft Download Center, or an online version of the tool. It’s your choice.
