If you are doing relatively extensive travel by rail, have a small bag and a large bag. Put two days worth of clothes, etc., in the small bag, everything else in the big one. Ship the big bag (by rail) to your destination two days away, carry the small bag with you. On arrival at the destination, retrieve the big bag and take it to your hotel. Recharge your small bag with new clothes, etc., dump the used stuff, souvenirs, etc. in the big bag, and ship it again downstream. Baggage shipping is usually free, or minimal cost, with a ticket.
